Einstein could barely read so he probably would have been in my class. I teach English II in a large inner city district in Illinois. We are a neighborhood school that has experienced student shootings, two killed and one in jail since September. I think 97% of the kids have free lunch, some are homeless. The kids in my class would like to learn to read because it is embarrassing not to know how. But it is hard to convince them I can teach them how after 10 years of other people trying.

My kids read at about the 2.5 grade equivalent and are sophomores in high school. Some remember everything they hear and this disability is very frustrating to them. If you can't read, you can't write. They are currently reading Tears of a Tiger and reading better daily. But I promised them more interesting books and I don't actually have any. Once they have read several books together they have the confidence to start reading independently and from there everything is possible again.

But what I do works and once again it is starting to gain momentum, but I need to keep them hooked with high interest novels. If I have these books I can almost guarantee that they will be begging to read. They read these and then I get them to the library and they take out the sequel and read in class. I've seen it happen again and again. But this year the books weren't ordered.

Lots of them aren't good at math like Einstein. I think they really need to learn how to read. Can you help us?
