This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Miss, I can't hear him!" "What's the point of performing if no one's going to listen?" Such comments are all too common in my inner city English classroom. I teach minority students in New York, and teaching Shakespeare is hard enough without dealing with the noises and interruptions that are all too common in our chaotic setting.

Since the majority of my students come from single-parent households, low-income families, and rough neighborhoods, they truly see school as a sanctuary from all the commotion beyond our school doors. The problem is when that commotion and chaos enters the classroom.

Enter - yellow tennis balls! I recall a brilliant solution my own high school teachers created to quiet the unnecessary noises and chaos of class. These tennis balls are cut and placed as covers on the bottom of my students' chairs and desks so that any movement whatsoever (and movement there is a-plenty!) is muffled by the tennis balls!

By providing my students with this ingenious gift, you are not only quieting an unnecessary source of noise and disturbance that is all too common in and out of their school lives, but you are further offering them a quiet stage and platform by which to perform their brilliantly memorized Shakespeare and Chaucer speeches. Sometimes it takes the best type of quiet to let the most powerful voices be heard. Please give my students some peace so that they can find the courage to lift up their voices.
