Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students today need to be using technology at school. I'm looking to expose curious minds to technology in an urban seventh grade math classroom. My students are all from low income families. Very few of my students have computers or access to technology at home.

Teaching and engaging seventh graders is getting more and more difficult. Math is a subject many students have interest in, but students have shown to lose focus watching examples being done from an overhead projector. Also, being able to share student work with the class is difficult for each student to visually see what was done by their classmates.

There are so many amazing projects and presentations that can be done from an LCD projector with a document camera. Graphing would come to life. Math games that reinforce concepts could be played simultaneously with the students. Examples of student work can be shown in the middle of solving problems to discuss strategies students have used. The document camera could zoom in on documents and manipulatives to provide views that have not been offered with traditional overhead projectors. The list could go on and on as to how this technology could not only keep my students engaged, but also inspire them to want to use technology for many different solutions. To also enhance the math classroom experience, I am asking for a heavy-duty pencil sharpener so students can freely solve problems in pencil and erase mistakes they make. Finally, my students use graphs in a variety of ways and need supplies to fulfill this learning objective.

I have motivated students who want to be successful, but are lacking resources to keep them in competition with other students in our state. Just because their parents cannot afford to provide technology for them doesn't mean they shouldn't be exposed to it throughout their education.
