Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work at a special education school servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our 175 students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. The school’s ethnicity is as follows: 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, 8% Caucasian, and 2% Asian. These factors come together and place our children at a huge disadvantage, but we are committed to providing them with a rigorous academic and therapeutic program. I teach beginning and intermediate Spanish classes to these special needs students. Introducing a foreign language to special needs students is an exciting challenge, and I am always seeking new materials to stimulate their learning. This proposal is for the Rosetta Stone learning system which my students can use during classroom lessons and their personal study periods. Rosetta Stone teaches students a new language naturally, by getting them to think, live, and breathe the language. I am particularly interested in utilizing the audio companion to assist my students with their pronunciation and integration of Spanish words into their daily lives. I am truly impressed with my students, because they are so engaged in my class. Some students have grown up speaking Spanish, and now they are learning to put grammar and spelling to use with their family's native language. I hope some of my students will be inspired to study Spanish when they go off to college. Thanks for viewing my proposal and considering my kids!
