What's a Bassoon?? (part 1)

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the Band Director at a public elementary school in New York. I teach students in grades 3-5 to play a band instrument for the first time. Our students LOVE learning about music, and I feel that my job is so rewarding when I see the smile on a student’s face when he or she masters something new on the instrument. Countless studies have shown the positive influence of music education in a student’s life, but I see the proof everyday. Students are more confident, more expressive, they begin to grasp their language better, and they even improve their test scores! I am so excited to be teaching these wonderful students!

This proposal is important to these students because many of them would not be able to participate in the music program if the school could not provide instruments for them to use. Many students are facing a very low-income situation at home, and your support could really change the course of their lives. Though they face many challenges, our students really are amazing. They would really benefit from your help!!!

With your help, my students will be introduced to an instrument they might otherwise never see or learn about. The bassoon is a very beautiful, important low woodwind instrument in the band and orchestra, and my students have only ever seen pictures of one! Because of the high cost of these instruments, our district does not currently own a bassoon. With help from your donation, our students will learn to play the bassoon and this will add a very important voice to our band. Every year we have rotating schedules so as many students as possible can be in our program, and every year we have many more students. Different students would be playing this bassoon each year from your generous donation, and the rest of the band would benefit from the diverse instrumentation. Also, as I am a woodwind player, I have chosen this specific model for its durability and sound quality. Bottom line: Everyone wins!!
