I teach kindergarten to 5th grade students in a Title One school in South Carolina. Many students are from low-income families and my goal is to offer them exciting art opportunities they can not receive at home.

Due to recent budget cuts in state education, I was not able to purchase all the necessary items for my students to create foil birds. In the past, my students have absolutely loved learning about birds and creating their foil birds. The unit of study links Visual Art with Science.

Fourth graders will be introduced to the art technique repoussé in this unit of study. Repoussé is the process of creating designs in metallic surfaces by hammering out a relief on the back of the surface. It was used by many ancient civilizations. The students will also learn about the life of birds and look at artwork which features animals in a repoussé style. Fourth graders will create a 3-d repoussé bird out of heavy aluminum foil, metal tooling tools and metal paint. The students will apply their knowledge of particular elements of art (form, line, shape and texture) and principles of design (balance and pattern) to their foil birds.

Your assistance will make it possible for my art students to learn about an ancient art technique and the life of birds and to create a unique project they can enjoy.
