Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

There is an anonymous adage that goes, "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader." I am a second year Teach For America English teacher serving in a high-needs, urban high school. I teach SAT Prep to juniors and seniors, and English 3 and English Honors 3 to juniors. With a new AP Literature class for seniors at my school, I have a unique opportunity to help students prepare for entry into the AP Lit class when I begin teaching English 3 and English Honors 3 this spring

Because our freshman and sophomore English curriculum is dedicated more to learning skills to pass standardized tests, students arrive in English their junior year with a small list of books they have read. Many of the books they have read are not AP-level books. With a very small English department budget, it is not possible to order books from within the school budget. In addition, the school library is very small, especially when it comes to high school level texts. The neighborhood branch library is also closed for renovations, so students are limited in their access to resources.

I am asking for a reading library of American literature books to both inspire and invest students in reading for the AP exam. Through the reading library, I hope to widen students' interest in reading as well as grow the list of AP books they have read in preparation for the exam. All of the books I have chosen either appear on the syllabi of high-achieving English honors curricula or on the list of AP books that have been used on the test in the past 20 years. Students will be required to read at least one AP book from the reading library for each marking period in addition to the books we will study in class.

Your donation will help my students discover or confirm their love of reading, enhance their reading, writing and vocabulary skills, prepare for the AP exam, and, ultimately give them a chance to earn college credit in high school and help, in some small way, to ease the financial burden of going to college. They will also learn many valuable independent reading and critical thinking skills they might not otherwise learn by reading outloud or in small groups in class which will prepare them for the demands and rigor of college. In addition, you will help students realize their dreams of going to college prepared, ready to succeed, and able to compete with anyone--regardless of where they went to high school.
