My Students

Every year I struggle with the disappearing act of the most popular books in our room. You know- ones that have been read, loved, and hidden under beds, kept secretly, or eaten by the dog. Every year I also aim to provide all students with the same access to great literature.

My students are readers, certainly.

When these sixth graders are MOTIVATED, they will read and read. (It actually isn't a special group of kids, just common sense. If it's interesting, we'll all spend time on it.) I know for a fact that some students who don't label themselves as readers are the notorious "criminals" who have kept the book they finally connected with. I love that for them, but my heart breaks when I think of all the students who don't have access to the text anymore.

My Project

Please help replace these lost books. They are a tremendous resource, one every teacher knows isn't supposed to be consumable but at times is. I also know my library needs to be full of titles that are just released. I don't want the students in my room to be at any sort of disadvantage compared to any other students who may have money to buy the newest book in a series that was just released. We learn so much from these tried and true novels and those that have yet to be discovered as magnificent. Our library is a place for students to learn the affective element of reading but under the surface still glean information about the world around them, the format of story, and the practice necessary to decode rich vocabulary.

Books are a unique commodity.

Not every title is right for every person. In that respect, we need a diverse library full of books that are known as classics in our room and those yet to be discovered. Please help impact our learning and identity as readers.
