Document Camera - For Language and Exploration

My students and school would like an Elmo TT-02RX for classwork, presentations, and science exploration.

I teach 5th grade at an urban elementary school. My class has a mix of different socio-economic levels and over a third of my students are on the free or reduced lunch plan. The class is diverse in its academic abilities as well and ranges from special education mainstreaming to gifted and talented identified students.

No more overhead projectors! The bulbs constantly burn out and are very expensive. The projectors are bulky and take up a lot of space in the classroom. Everything must be transferred to a plastic sheet to be projected by an overhead projector. Finally, you cannot project objects! We want to look at things (bugs, crystals, pictures) up close. This is not possible with an overhead projector.

I have seen classrooms with an Elmo document camera. The teachers can project anything onto a screen: books, homework, instructions, a handwritten note, an inchworm (you can see its digestive tract moving), a plant (xylem and phloem are obvious) and more. This is a wonderful new way of accessing the world in a greater variety and detail than was ever available before to a teacher. Students will be able to bring in things they want to explore that are related to what we are studying. This is a fantastic way of pulling them deeper into their own education and aiding them in discovering more than they even knew they were curious about. I am also responsible for training other teachers and can use the Elmo to show lessons and math games on a big screen. The Elmo will be available for PTA meetings, the principal, and other classroom teacher's to use.

Your help will enliven education even more in my classroom and in our school. You will make it possible for students of all grade levels to access and explore language arts, social studies, science, and math in a deeper, more accessible, and therefore more meaningful way. You will help teachers to learn more about the changing ways of education which helps them to be better teachers. You will help bring light (via projector) in a colorful and three-dimensional way into our school community.
