Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ambitious readers craving popular and engaging books. I teach third grade at a community charter school. Our school is located in a low-socio economic area. It is considered a low performing school. California's budget issues have hit our school hard. Our school lacks the funds for teachers to buy fresh reading material for our students. Since we have many reluctant and struggling readers, the material we offer the students must be interesting and appealing.

Lately, my students have been acting as if they have caught a bug. And I don't mean the flu bug! They are obsessed with graphic novels. Our school library was able to purchase a few graphic novels. However, there is a large waiting list as the whole school has caught this bug. There are a few graphic novels in our classroom library, but not enough to put one in every pair of hands.

Our classroom would greatly benefit from adding graphic novels to our library. The books offer enough picture support to help my English Language Learners and struggling readers, but still require a lot of text to be read. These books have also caught the attention of my boys who usually only choose the animal and sports books. Graphic novels offer vocabulary development, story elements, and comprehension practice.

Your donation will plant the seed for a long life of loving to read. Once the students get hooked with graphic novels, that love of reading will transfer to a variety of books. You have the opportunity to attract all readers, even the reluctant ones.
