Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

There is an inner city school in Michigan whose students are eager to learn and whose dreams include learning skills that will get them a career where their lives are impacting those around them for the better. Students who want to give back to the community and make a difference while learning to become responsible adults. I am the science teacher for these students and have I got a tale for you!

All right people, here is the situation: you are in the middle of an important assignment- either for work or school- and the ideas are just flowing; you’ve got your groove on, and the worst thing in the world just happened. It wasn’t a phone call or a fire drill but your pencil lead just broke (again) and the sharpener doesn’t work because the last class overheated it trying to get their colored pencils sharpened. Even if they had not overheated it, it is constantly hungry and eats pencils down to the eraser the first time you try to sharpen it. This is the dilemma a certain inner city school faces on a daily basis. These are wonderful kids, eager to learn and wanting to share their creativity with the world but it gets quickly stifled trying to get a pencil sharpener to work and finish everything within one class period. Imagine writing the data for a science experiment and you lose the data because your pencil just cannot keep a lead in its case. I am the science teacher for these energetic inner city students and the scene I have described takes place so many times that I have often thought about throwing the thing out the window. I did buy those little hand held things but they do not hold

We need commercial pencil sharpeners that will last a school year, real wood pencils that will sharpen when needed and not dissolve in the sharpener, and decent erasers. Wood pencils do not tend to fall apart and will keep their lead in the pencil. Erasers for the tops will keep the pencil in use longer. These are simple supplies but vital when this is the only means of communication you have for your ideas. Pencils inspire creativity but can become the thief of dreams when you are spending your time trying to fix the pencil rather that record your ideas. Sharpened pencils will become these students’ gateway into their future instead of creating piles of fire starters from the sawdust of the shredded pencils.

What a different you can make by helping us to secure such simple things that are so desperately needed. Ideas can be saved and you can feel that warm spot in your heart knowing that you helped make their lives (and mine) a little easier by eliminating this challenge for us. Your donation can keep our ideas flowing! We would be so very grateful if you would help us reach this simple little goal. Simple, but very, very vital!
