Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a large urban elementary school with a high rate of tardiness and absentees. We have many homeless students and students who move from school to school often. It is hard for them to keep motivated to be at school on time every day considering how hard life is for them.

Our staff offers a lot of kind words, smiles, positive feedback, etc. The students absolutely respond to this, but not enough. These are children who do not have many personal belongings and the thought of winning a prize can be very motivating.

Our staff has decided to provide raffles during the months of December and June with rather big prizes for students with perfect attendance. We chose these months based on the fact that we have the lowest attendance rates at that time. We also have a school economy for students with good attendance and positive behavior for the other months. We would like the give away ipod shuffles, board games and markers and crayons.

Due to extreme budget shortfalls, we have run out of money to purchase the incentives to get our students motivated to be at school and learning. You can make it possible to motivate a whole school of students to be at school everyday. If given the proper tools and encouragement, they can and will improve their quality of life.
