Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The bell rings and I close the door. I don't have to worry about kids being tardy, everyone is already in class, sprawled across my floor. We're doing learning stations. Within five minutes, music plays, signaling that the warm up is over, and stations have begun. Students grab their materials and choose their activity...some on the floor, some with a friend, and some with me. In the constant change and challenge of today's global economy, it is vital for students to become flexible and self-directed learners. I have undertaken the challenge of creating learning stations that will guide students to interact with the world around them in relationship to mathematic skills. My goal is the help students to realize their own potential through success in whatever form that takes.

My greatest challenge in teaching sixth and seventh grade math lies in the great diversity of my learners. My students range in their ability levels, from special education children with specific needs, to recent immigrants who have knowledge, but are not yet able to communicate due to the language barrier, to general education students, to gifted and talented individuals who need a challenge. This poses quite a feat to one teacher. My solution has been to create learning stations, allowing each child to process material at his or her own pace. This also frees me up to give extra support to those kids who need it.

The stations I currently run involve using computers, games, discussion forums, and conferencing methods. I need card stock, clip boards, self-adhesive labels and three bean bag chairs to enhance the self directed experience of middle school math learning stations. These supplies will help me to complete the stations and continue to build more. Since the students are able to work independently the bean bags and clipboards will foster comfort and utility within my classroom.

Thus far, my students have been excited about participating in the learning stations. The independence fostered by this style of teaching prepares students for a lifetime of success. Just yesterday a group of kids gathered outside of my classroom and peered in to check out the stations. Later they came back and asked if they could switch into my math class. That's what learning math is all about! Kids should be excited about coming to class! Math is fun! There's something sweet in the groans I hear each day as the dismissal bell rings!
