I am lucky to teach in a very small, rural town. A lot of the families are still farmers which require the students to do farm chores after school. This limits their time to practice the repetitive skills necessary.

I teach 96 wonderful eighth graders. The majority of the children are those that have not previously been successful in Math. They have learned numerous means of avoiding the learning process. Approaching them using traditional techniques has not been successful. Roughly a third of the children did not pass the seventh grade end of year testing. For them to succeed this year, they must not only master the eighth grade curriculum but must be retaught some of the basic seventh grade skills.

The children today are constantly surrounded with visual stimulus such as videos, TV, and gaming systems. They are also exposed to auditory stimulus through MP3 players. When they are exposed to such mediums, they can remember mass amounts of information. Since my children have not previously been successful in learning Math, I need to present the material in a familiar media. The videos that I am requesting will allow the children to learn in a familiar and comfortable method. Using the standard methods of repetition and reteaching is one the children have learned to avoid and disengage from. These videos will allow me to grasp their attention and allow them to learn the necessary skills.

If we could provide the children with the material in a format that they are accustomed to, they will be more successful. By allowing the children to learn using visual and auditory media, the children will begin to realize that they can be successful in an area that they had not previously been successful. If we can turn around their lack of confidence and feeling of defeat, we can provide them with the most valuable skills needed in the future - that even though they were not successful in the past, it does not limit what they can do in the future.
