Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently work for Teach For America and I teach Algebra 1 to 150 students in an at-risk community. Our goal is to have ALL students pass the End of Course Algebra exam with a score of 80% or better!

Students in today's classroom are 21st Century Learners. What does that mean? It means that students need to use current technology "to go beyond basic mastery of skills and curriculum to explore and expand one’s own learning and opportunities to gain expertise." In my classroom we have a whiteboard and an overhead projector. These tools are not enough to engage and inspire 21st Century Learners in my classroom. Students in this at-risk community deserve the same opportunities as students in affluent communities.

The solution to this problem is to bring Smart Board Technology into my classroom. To bring Smart Board Technology into the classroom the first step is to acquire the LCD projector. By using the LCD projector students will engage in 21st Century Learning. The projector will increase the number of students who reach or surpass our goal. We will work through interactive demonstrations and students will become invested in their learning experiences. I will be able to relate to the students on their level and the projector will allow me to show the real-world applications of Algebra. The use of SMART technology in the classroom will prepare my students for their collegiate experiences. Colleges and universities require students to be creative and inventive. The more familiar my students are with using technology the more competitive they will be in college level classes that require the use of technology.

Your support will ensure that my students have the same technology as the students in more affluent districts. The LCD projector will help me engage my 21st Century Learners and it will help me relate to relate to the experiences students have outside of school. Please help my students prepare for their collegiate experiences and reach their goal of earning 80% or better on the end of Course exam.
