Countdown to Centennial

My students need 2 laptops and an external hard drive for storage of files and photos to produce the school's monthly newspaper and yearbook.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Did you take the photo?" "Who is doing the story on the new construction?" "Can you check this page?" "Are the first 36 pages of the yearbook deadline done?" Such is a typical day in my high school journalism classroom - or should I say newsroom? In just a short 48 minutes each day, my 17 students generate enough energy and enthusiasm to rival any Energizer Bunny. What we lack in resources as a Title I inner city public high school, we make up for in ideas, effort and ingenuity. We have produced two issues of the newspaper so far, but now as we begin to work on the yearbook simultaneously, we don't have enough computers for students to complete their work (only four computers with InDesign). Most of the students don't have computers at home, so the time we spend during class and after school is crucial to completing our publications and meeting our deadlines. Our editors develop their ideas, coordinate the staff's duties, report, write and edit, as well as design and check newspaper and yearbook pages. They take their responsibilities as record-keepers and historians of the school seriously. This project-based, critical thinking class receives no additional money for equipment or printing costs, so in addition to producing the publications, students also have to market, solicit advertising and fund raise to publish the newspaper and yearbook for our campus of 2,400 students. To this end, we are starting a campaign to expand our publications and build on the rich, diverse legacy of our school with an eye to the celebration of its centennial in 2012. The skills and experiences student editors and reporters gain through producing publications is invaluable regardless of their chosen career path. These laptops and external hard drive will give deserving students the opportunity to work more, achieve more, create and preserve lasting memories for themselves and their fellow schoolmates.
