I teach 9-11th grade ESL and English Language Arts (ELA) in a high poverty school, in a state (New York) where budget cuts have pretty much eliminated any chance of integrating technology in more than 1% of the classrooms. Our school laser copier never has any toner and is constantly broken because it is not meant for high capacity use. This has made it difficult for me to create homework assignments, guided notes and visuals which are essential to my English Learning kids. Because most of them do not have computers at home and the public libraries in the neighborhood are insufficient, they are unable to really see their computer work printed and presented. a laser printer will be the first important step in solving these two problems! With a laser printer in the classroom, and my personal computer which i will lend to the kids, the students will be able to see how rough drafts can be transformed into typed, neat presentations which are a requirement for all work submitted in college. This will also allow me to create University level projects, syllabi and guided notes just like in a university, to begin to train these how to interact with and keep assignments given by their professors. This will also function to support the need to constantly create visuals and manipulative which are essential in supporting and ESL education. This is the first step in my effort to integrate technology into my classroom and begin a truly college bound track for my students. With your help and support we will be able to take this first step and continue to create projects which will make these kids competitive with their more affluent counterparts. I think they deserve the same opportunities and access to technology which is common to the majority of the country. Thank you so much for believing in us and helping us get our future of the ground! My students need a laser printer for the class, to print projects, homework assignments and class tools.
