"College bound kids in high poverty school yearn to become competitive with more modern technology and learning methods!

I teach 9-11th grade ESL and English Language Arts (ELA) in a high poverty school, in a state (New York) where budget cuts have pretty much eliminated any chance of integrating technology in more than 1% of the classrooms. Our school laser copier never has any toner and is constantly broken because it is not meant for high capacity use. This has made it difficult for me to create homework assignments, guided notes and visuals which are essential to my English Learning kids. Because most of them do not have computers at home and the public libraries in the neighborhood are insufficient, they are unable to really see their computer work printed and presented. a laser printer will be the first important step in solving these two problems!

With a laser printer in the classroom, and my personal computer which i will lend to the kids, the students will be able to see how rough drafts can be transformed into typed, neat presentations which are a requirement for all work submitted in college. This will also allow me to create University level projects, syllabi and guided notes just like in a university, to begin to train these how to interact with and keep assignments given by their professors. This will also function to support the need to constantly create visuals and manipulative which are essential in supporting and ESL education.

This is the first step in my effort to integrate technology into my classroom and begin a truly college bound track for my students. With your help and support we will be able to take this first step and continue to create projects which will make these kids competitive with their more affluent counterparts. I think they deserve the same opportunities and access to technology which is common to the majority of the country.

Thank you so much for believing in us and helping us get our future of the ground!

My students need a laser printer for the class, to print projects, homework assignments and class tools. The cost of this proposal is $419, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Mr. T. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dear samantha, Nadia and Oleg, Aalok, Henry, Dane, Ronald, Ilya, Alexander and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,

As I was able to quickly note in my initial thank you post, I would like to take this opportunity to further express my own and my students excitement and gratitude for what you have done!
When there is a constant cycle of negativity and let-downs, when resources are noticeably disparate, coupled with a learning curve retarded by tracking and non-nonchalance, students outlook inevitably worsens and their actions are reflective of this. But miracles of care and attention such as the one you were able to provide are one of the key foundational steps it altering their perception of the world, their current and future place in it, as well as sparking new desire to learn and grow as citizens!
This printer and copier will serve the classroom in more capacities than one can imagine. Students will be able to print out homework assignments, presentations, projects, reports, e-books... as I will be able to print worksheets and differentiated assignments to support the diverse need of my students.
Thank you again, from the bottom, top and middle of my heart for your support.

With gratitude,
Mr. T.
