Bring English to Life with LCD Projector

My English Language Learners need an LCD Projector to view Language-Learning, Math, Science and other on-line educational resources.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are fifth grade English Language Learners in a largely immigrant, inner city community. Many of the students face the additional challenge of a learning disablity. In spite of facing many obstacles, my students have a strong work ethic and see education as their path to success.

As fifth graders, my students have to master complex skills in Math, Science and Social Studies. Their English language skills, while improving, often hold them back when it comes to comprehending unfamiliar concepts, such as latitude and longitude, percentages, or making qualitative and quantitative observations. There are many wonderful educational Web Sites that illustrate these concepts with visuals, sound and graphics, which is just what language learners need to help them grasp complex ideas.

With an LCD pojector, I would be able to present difficult new concepts to the whole class by showing tutorials that are available on-line. For example, a well-known mathematics Web Site has graphics that illustrate the use of percentages in circle graphs (and many more). As part of a math lesson, I would show this graphic to the class. Students would be able to interact by creating their own circle graphs based on questions they create themselves. Right now, I can only have one or two students at the computer at a time, making it impossible to give this advantage to all the students.

There are so many educational resources available on the Web. My students, among the most vulnerable in our system, are the most likely to benefit from the visuals, graphics, and auditory support that the Web can provide. Yet they are the least likely to have access to these incredible new technologies. Your help will bring the best educational tools currently available to the students who will appreciate it most! Thank you!
