Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 100 12th grade students in South LA--where all of my students are low-income. Our charter school has been immensely successful, and we're getting ready to send this first senior class off to college.

My students--most of whom either are first generation or the children of first-generation Americans--are disconnected from the importance of the role government plays in their life.

The Teacher's Curriculum Institute's Government Alive! program is an ideal way to get students who often feel antagonistic towards government (many times, because of policies that adversely affect their families) to become engaged as advocates of both Government and positive involvement and change in Government. These materials are an inherently engaging and interactive way to teach and involve students in the study of American Government. They will provide students with that long-term "hook" that will be so essential for them to engage in a personal and positive relationship with American Government, particularly at this time when so many people are so hopeful about the promise of the work government can do.

Your help will ensure that my students leave high school with positive notions of how Government can be an advocate for them, rather than seeing it as a foil to them. My students are brilliant--you can help them channel that to become change-makers of the next generation!
