Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help Inspire 150 young minds to overcome adversity in the lives of inner city school children. I teach 8th grade science in a high-need inner city school system.

In order to purchase this supplemental curriculum outside funding is desperately needed. Many of my students' families cannot simply afford life's basics, including water, electric, and heat, let alone the extra cost of supplemental classroom materials that the school district cannot supply. Students need to read about individuals who have overcome similar obstacles to help break the cycle that currently confines social classes and create new opportunities for themselves.

I would like to purchase a classroom set of the book "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" for my students to read as part of their science curriculum. The students that I serve rarely read books and as one consequence of that, students score poorly on the reading portion of standardized tests. I want to incorporate reading into my classroom to help improve test scores and give students the opportunity to read about successful men and women who came from situations not unlike their own.

Your generosity in helping to fund this project will have lifelong benefits in the lives of the students I instruct. They need to know that there are individuals out in the community, other than teachers and parents, that care about their education and future success. Thank you!
