"In our classroom we have a goal to climb the hill to third grade. But we have many challenges ahead of us. I teach in a collaborative team teaching setting with a fantastic co-teacher. Forty percent of our students have IEPs (individualized education plans) and sixty percent of our students are general education students. In our classroom we have students with autism, speech and language deficiencies, learning disabilities, and other impairments. Our school is located in a high needs community in New York.
The majority of our students are far behind in reading. Some of them are even reading on a kindergarten level and are in second grade. Next year, they will be facing their first standardized testing and it is up to us to get them reading and understanding stories. One way we do this is using a listening center to practice fluency and comprehension. Our current listening center is a broken tape player and our school does not have the funding to replace it.
Many of our students need to learn through multi-sensory stimulation. My co-teacher and I have come up with the idea to use IPODS and purchase audiobooks through Itunes. Along with having the audiobooks, students will also need a copy to follow along as they listen. This way the can see the words they are hearing and increase their comprehension. Using an IPOD would stimulate our students visually and auditorially. They would also be excited to use new technology in the classroom. Having a dynamic listening center with high interest books will definitely help our students grow in reading and reach their goals.
Your help will ensure that our students will reach their second grade goals and become lifelong lovers of reading. It will really make a difference in the life our students!
My students need 2 Ipods, an Itunes gift card and a collection of 10+ books, including "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and "Junie B. Jones's First Boxed Set Ever!".
The cost of this proposal is $688, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

"I gave to this project because I love Ms. Peacock and I miss her dearly. She's incredibly caring, funny, and intelligent, and I can only imagine what a joyful classroom she has established this year for her second graders. She's one of few who chooses to stay and battle the achievement gap in NYC. "
