Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In order to graduate high school in New York State, all students must pass a series of state-mandated examinations called the Regents exams. In my field of mathematics, all of my students must score a 65 or higher in the Integrated Algebra Regents examination to fulfill their graduation requirements.

I currently teach two classes of eleventh graders who have yet to pass this required examination. If these students do not pass their Algebra exam this semester, they are running the risk of being able to graduate high school on time. Unfortunately, the poor economic conditions in New York led to school-wide budget cuts. These budget cuts have led to my Regents-preparation classroom to lack in certain key materials, such as review books.

A class set of the Barron's review book, the most widely-used review book when it comes to Regents preparation, would help my students in many ways. First, the chapters in the book focus solely on the most important topics covered on the state examination. This means that my students will be able to specialize on key math ideas. Second, these review books will hopefully infuse the idea of studying and preparing for the "big test," a skill that many of my students lack. This skill is also key in enabling them to pass their other state examinations, and will help them graduate with their Regents diplomas on time.

Your donation will provide my students, who have failed at this examination on more than four occasions, a fighting chance to passing the dreaded state test. Growing up as a child, I have used these review books to help me through my Regents exams. It is my hope that my students will gain the same success that I have had.
