I teach biology in a high-risk school in North Carolina. Biology is an exit standard for North Carolina, so I see all students, some several times. Biology is a difficult subject, and I try to make it relevant to their lives on a daily basis. I really take this opportunity as a challenge to inform and engage my students in the amazing world of biology. I strive to allow them to discover details of their world, and become contributing members of their community by being informed about the way their body and the world around them functions.

North Carolina is facing a budget crisis, and my school has been in financial crisis for years. We have the basics, but to really hook students in on biology, they need to see the latest and greatest techniques.

A basic need for every biology student is to be able to use a microscope. The microscopes at our school are old and worn out. My students love using them, and making new discoveries, but it is difficult with the old microscopes that we have available. If my students could see the microscopic world more clearly, how much more fascinating would biology become? And if biology becomes more fascinating, it is more likely that my students would want to continue their biology education in college. Also, knowing how to use the microscope is a basic prerequisite to every biology course in college.

With this donation, my students could not only become more prepared for college courses, but be able to literally see more of the world around them. Hopefully, they will not only see, but understand, and long to learn more about the amazing world of biology.
