Recording Sales and Services

My students need one commercial cash register, at least 2 sales order books, 2 money receipt books and one job-work order book to practice their math skills.

I teach the Occupational Course of Study in a public high school in North Carolina. The Occupational Course of Study is designed to help low achievers earn a high school diploma that will prepare them for independent living and employment skills.

The Occupational Course of Study is filled with objectives and long-term goals that focus on students' ability to learn and build independent skills that they will need to use when living on their own and when having a job. Some of these skills include: reading community and employment signs and words, counting money, completing a money transaction, writing/recording accurate information, completing employment-related forms and building a personal budget. Many of these objectives are taught with textbooks and with limited hands-on manipulative and teaching tools. Especially in these harsh economic times, it is difficult to get realistic materials purchased by our school. It is even more difficult to purchase electronic items unless a fund-raiser or club sponsored activity is planned to purchase electronic items. Electronic/technology items are not always honored in our purchase orders.

The main resource we need to learn about math skills is a cash register; one similar to what real cashiers use in stores. If this project in funded, my students will be able to enhance their money skills by practicing money transactions such as counting money, giving change, pressing correct keys, reading dollar amounts, recording transactions, writing purchase orders and recording receipt forms. These materials will expose them to real-life materials that people actually use in the real world of work and independent living.

With your help, my students will have first-hand, direct and constant exposure to real-life working tools and documents and will receive appropriate training regarding completing work-order forms, completing money transactions and writing receipts for customers. They will be able to complete forms that not only look real, but that are the real thing -what you see and use in stores and businesses.
