My class has a unique make-up. We have 31 kids in our class. 50% of my class is made up of students who are English Language Learners and 59% of my class is either Asian, African American, or Hispanic. Each year our school is required per No Child Left Behind to test our students in math, reading, and science. The past few years, students have met Adequate Yearly Progress in math and reading. However, we continue to struggle in science. Members of these minority groups have struggled the most, and our teachers continue to equally struggle to find ways to help them become successful on the state's test. Our principal has once again challenged me to develop lessons which will enrich students' scientific awareness and give them the knowledge to meet AYP. One idea I have is to give them more active lessons and develop a science week. During the Science Week, my students will preform and participate in various lessons where the main focus is on space exploration and discovery. One huge part of the lessons will be on rockets. It's also ironic because that's our school's mascot! Students will learn how rockets have helped the human race explore space, and reach places which were only a dream at one time. The rocket kits will allow the students to understand the physics used behind the launching of rockets and what is important in order for them to reach the sky. I also intend to integrate math and reading into the lessons, by having students calculate the height and distance of the rockets after launch. I would like for students to work in pairs with a kit to share and allow them to work in a social situation. Students who have access to active learning perform better on standardized testing. The kits will also foster a social atmosphere, which is supported with academic learning. My science week project needs 24 rocket kits and 1 bottle rocket kit.
