Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a sixth grade teacher at a Title One school in which approximately 70% of our student body receives free or reduced lunch. I have a self contained class of English language learners, and I have the privilege of teaching them all of their core subjects this year. I have a really great group of kids, and anticipate that this will be a really exciting school year.

My students, although sweet and adorable, have many challenges before them including language barriers, that prevent them from performing proficiently both in Math and Language Arts. For this reason, I am trying to incorporate a lot of project, and art inspired materials to increase interest in the content of what we are learning, and improve retention of skills.

For this reason, I am requesting some basic materials such as colored pencils and poster boards, markers, and rulers, that students can use to create visuals, and make presentations about what they are studying. We are in the midst of the month of October, and unfortunately, the supply orders that were placed in June were canceled. They have still not been delivered so I am hopeful that some of these items can be used in the mean time to keep the children working creatively and motivated!
