The Science Behind Dr. Seuss

My students need various NON-FICTION books that are lower leveled readers, such as "If I ran the Rainforest" and "Is a Camel a Mammal?"

Hi there! Let me first say thank you for your time in looking over my proposal and choosing to help children get the best education they can, even if you don't choose to fund my proposal, help someone here, because it will touch a child's life and future! That said.... I am a fifth grade teacher at a Title I school in NC. Our school is very unique and diverse. My class is made up of Hispanic, African American, Caucasian, and Multi-racial children. About 90% of the students in MY CLASS are on free/reduced lunch and have very little home support.

The books in my classroom are very old and very few of them relate to science on a level that my kids can understand the concepts.. Many of my students struggle with reading in general due to language barriers, and especially reading about science concepts in our curriculum such as weather, ecosystems and laws of physics.

I would like to use books that integrate the two core academics to help my students in their weak area of study, while also increasing understanding of the concepts, vocabulary, and fluency skills, especially for my ESL learners. This is the ideal way to introduce the students to both science and reading, through focusing on books that are fun to read and still teach core concepts. If they feel successful in one area and can link that success to the area that they struggle with, they can be successful on both reading and science!

The best part of this proposal is that it can be used for years to come! A few of the titles in my selection are : If I Ran the Rainforest ( a book about ecosystems and the impact humans have on the Rainforest) Oh Say Can You Say What's the Weather Today? (All About Weather) Thanks again for helping students everywhere with your donations. Your help with this endeavor will make my students feel successful in math and reading, not only this year, but for years to come! Thanks again for helping students everywhere with your donations
