"My students need to acquire a deeper understanding of the cultural influences of ancient Greece and Rome. The Chrysler Museum is a fantastic resource that will inspire my students' imaginations and help them deepen and broaden their perspective of ancient Rome.

My students are Latin students in grades 9-12 in a low-income area of Northeastern North Carolina. These students on average do not get the travel, museum, and other cultural experiences that students in more affluent areas enjoy.

Latin helps students prepare for college-level reading and the terminology needed for careers in law, medicine, and a wide range of others. The museum offers resources and connections that tie in with our classroom studies. Examples are: samples of ancient glass from Pompeii and its influence on Tiffany glass, an explanation of ancient cameo-making and its influence on glass, and the influence of mythology on art throughout the ages. There are even Latin inscriptions on ancient tapestries and other artwork that students can try to read. The museum visit will appeal to a wide range of student interests and will motivate them to continue to study and to learn all they can about ancient languages, civilizations, and cultures.

The state of North Carolina has been extremely hard-hit by a budget crisis this year, and the local unemployment rate is at near-record levels. With so many educational needs being unmet, and cutbacks made in many areas, this trip will be impossible without donor support.

We need funding for mileage, an activity bus driver, student admissions to the museum, and students' lunches while away from school, since many of our students are on free or reduced lunches.

With the deep cutbacks throughout the school system due to the state budget crisis, this trip will be impossible without donor support. With your help, all our students will be able to enjoy this unique educational and cultural opportunity. The result will be more well-rounded students who are better prepared for high school and for college. Students' lives will also be enriched by the beautiful, inspiring artwork they will see and by the history and mythology they will learn. hide»

Dear Penny, Linda, Amy and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,

My students were delighted with their field trip to the Chrysler Museum. The museum staff was welcoming, the docents were erudite, and the students said they learned a lot. They thanked me earnestly and profusely when we returned from the trip. They said it was great fun, and they would like to talk their parents into taking them back.

I did not realize until I proofread their thank-you notes that very few of them had ever visited the Chrysler before. I suspect many of them have never visited a major art museum. For my Latin I students, this was the culminating activity for a project where they researched Greco-Roman myths and designed and made their own museums to showcase their learning. Some made dioramas, while others made virtual museums online. The Latin I tour was focused, therefore, on myths. The Latin II and III students learned more about the contributions of the Greeks and Romans to art. They also learned about other ancient cultures, particularly the Egyptian, Chinese, South American, and African cultures, to compare with what we have learned about the Romans. The museum had a special exhibit on the Egyptian afterlife that these students found particularly interesting.

The docents, chaperones, and museum staff all complimented my students on being particularly attentive and well-behaved. These students represented our community, our school, and the Donors Choose program well. Please be assured that your donation was appreciated and will make a lasting impact on these students' lives.

With gratitude,
Ms. C.

Dear Penny, Linda, Amy and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,

My students are excited about the opportunity to visit the Chrysler Museum. My Latin I students are going to learn more about Greco-Roman mythology and its influence. My Latin II and III students will learn more about the general influence of Greco-Roman culture. All students are touched to learn that you care about their college and career aspirations, that you believe in the value of field trips to museums, and that you believe in THEM enough to fund this trip out of your own resources. Thank you for providing them with inspiration, with this opportunity, and with lasting memories during their formative years.

With gratitude,
Ms. C.
