Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are growing up in a community filled with gang violence and pressures with low incomes and limited opportunities for higher level education. I teach 7th grade language arts, striving to teach literature that promote global awareness and real-world skills.

Dr. Mortenson's memoir promotes the idea of education being the path to a peaceful and successful life. It also fits nicely into our team's goals of providing cultural experiences for our students that increase their awareness of the world and the opportunities it holds for them. However, we have a very tight budget. Thanks to donorschoose.org, we have received the novels that we need. Now, I need the audio-books and the means to play them to make the novel even more accessible to my students who learn better through hearing the words rather than just reading them.

This memoir will allow students to see that one individual can make a difference in this world. It will actively engage them in reading. It will also provide a beautiful look at a part of the world so many of them only consider in terms of war and violence. The audio-books will help eliminate their struggle with pronunciation that might cause them to disengage from this wonderful book.

Your help will provide the rigor and relevance to my classroom curriculum that I work daily to provide for them as well as providing a better differentiated learning environment. It is one more way to incorporate the multiple intelligences into my classroom.
