"Rarely does a high-need, minimal resource school have the opportunity to offer high school students a 15 credit college course. Luckily for a group of 12th graders in Oregon, 40 students will have the chance to take a "Senior Inquiry" class, preparing them for college and making them the first in their families to take a college level course. Many of my students have never considered college as a possibility. They have resigned themselves to the limits and roles assigned to them. College is not a possibility, financially or academically -- until now.

Because this is a very unique college-level course, the most enriching and engaging literature is not necessarily available in our small public high school library. The requested novel examines the conflict of gender and cultural identity and the limitations we place upon ourselves. In an effort to "unmask" the individual and discover the root of our individual identity, we will examine the masks that society, culture, gender, and race place on us.

We need 30 copies of Jeffrey Eugenides' "Middle Sex". This novel will be the second of a series of unique and engaging literature that examines the development of the self. It will encourage critical analysis -- a skill essential to college success.

Your donation will not only open the physical door to college, but will also allow students to open their minds.
