My students need 47 enticing, new, and interesting books for our classroom library - geared toward their varied levels, abilities, and interests.

I teach 2nd grade to 30 at-risk inner city children in Illinois. This year I have a very wide range of reading levels. The most important thing to me is getting the kids interested and comfortable with reading. I do not have any brand new books and all the books I attached to this grant are interesting and geared toward the many different levels of readers I have in my room. I teach all subjects in my room (self-contained). I do have children with special needs in my room as well.

My students love to hear me read to them and they love getting to go to our classroom library. I cannot even imagine the look on their faces if we were to be given these books for our classroom. Most of my students are in such need that they have no books of their own, so the only time they are exposed to books is when they are with me. I want to get them hooked on reading now.

I need many brand new, brightly colored, interesting books for my classroom library. I chose books purposely for a wide range of reading abilities since there are some children in my class that cannot read at all and some that can read independently. These books would benefit my students because they would have brand new, interesting and meaningful books to choose from along with our heavily-used books currently in our classroom library.

Your help will ensure that my students have exposure to books they would otherwise never have the chance to see or use on a daily basis. I believe in closing the achievement gap and that is why I have chosen to continue teaching at my school going on 5 years now. Second grade is such a pivotal age for reading, I want my children to see that reading is fun and cool, not something to fear.
