""Wow! Look at him move!"
I teach 2nd grade in a low-income, high-need elementary school. I teach in a school that incorporates looping in a two year cycle. I am in the 2nd year of my 2 year loop. I have 16 students that were in my 1st grade classroom last year. I currently have 26 students including a student who is emotionally disabled. They come from large families where it is hard to get attention on a daily basis. Most of my students have never even had a pet. They are all looking for someone to love! All day long I get affection from my students. They love to give me hugs, hold my hand, and even (accidentally) call me mom. I love to comfort my students and let them know that I care. However, we have lots to do in our busy schedule! And I have more students than hugs to give out in any given moment!
Not only do my students need a classroom pet to share their love and attention, they need a pet to learn about life cycles and living things. You can learn so much information from a book and videos but real life experiences are incomparable! I need one classroom pet in the form of a Russian Tortoise. A tortoise is a great classroom pet because they are low-maintenance, curious, and have a long life expectancy. Not only will my students be able to learn and care for their pet this school year, but my students for years to come will enjoy this classroom perk.
In addition to the Russian Tortoise, I need all the makings of a woodland habitat, including an aquarium, heat lamps to regulate the temperature, bedding, food, and shelter. With your donation (of any amount, large or small) my students will get the chance to learn what it takes to raise and care for a living pet. If this project is fulfilled I can help teach my students to take responsibility not just for their learning but also for another "classmate."
My students need a Russian Tortoise and its complete habitat to study animal life and how things live.
The cost of this proposal is $520, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Kylie's Mom, Ron, janet, Tina, Kimberly, Lindsay and Wayne Township Education Foundation,
From my students and me, a HUGE Thank You goes out to all of you! I cannot believe how fast this grant was funded! Because of generous friends, family, and strangers alike, my classroom will welcome a new "student" very soon! When I spill the beans to my 26 students that we will be receiving a Russian Tortoise, I can only imagine the excitement that will follow! This week and next we are studying animals and this project couldn't come at a better time! We will definitely start studying Tortoises to prepare for our class pet's arrival! By the end of the year my students will have learned how to care for a pet as well as learning it's background. Again, thank you for your donations! I cannot wait to post pictures for you all to enjoy! With gratitude, Mrs. R.

"I gave to this project because I believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn about animals and I saw how much the class loved the turtle on our fieldtrip. I think the class should get in a big circle and give your teacher a BIG hug for caring so much! "
