I am a new teacher in a high need, high poverty school system. My class consists of 3rd graders, many of whom read on a 1st grade level. In addition I teach a lower ability math group. Many of these students come from federal housing projects and low income families.

Math should be a joy, not a curse! Yet many students find math to be just that - a curse. They find it difficult to relate these concepts to every day life. They have little support at home to help link these concepts to their world. Literature is a way to link a content area to their worlds. Access to books not only improves literacy, but opens a door to other learning!

The resources I've requested will provide students with additional literature options in the classroom. More importantly these stories link math to real world situations in a fun and engaging way. Stories about math hook students with rhymes, characters and more, while teaching basic concepts "in disguise". They can also be used as a teaching tool to introduce a concept. Many of these stories also have activities that are linked to the stories and provide hands on application of the skills.

Literature and literacy are critical, especially in high poverty schools. Using literature as a springboard for other content area helps students grasp concepts better! By supporting this request, you will be empowering my students not only to be better readers, but also provide them with additional support in math. These are 2 critical areas for their future success in life!
