My students need class subscriptions to three different current news magazines as well as question cards to help them improve their reading comprehension skills.
I teach sixth grade World History and Math in rural Tennessee. We are a Title I school, with 85% of students on free or reduced-price lunch.
We study World History and my students find it difficult to relate our studies to what is happening in their world today. Regular newspapers and news magazines are not written on a 6th graders interest level so they are not motivated to read about current events.
News magazines that are written especially for kids would grab and hold their attention long enough for them to read an article through to its end. These magazines would also provide an opportunity for me to connect their World History lessons to current events. We would be able to make comparisons between historic events and current events as well as enriching the educational opportunities in the classroom.
The question cards would enable me to set up small group activities where the students would be able to formulate thought provoking questions on their own within their peer group.
I have a lively and energetic group of students who love to learn. I strive every day to provide them with the best educational experience I can. I want to provide them with a connection between their school lessons and their lives. Having access to news magazines written with students in mind will encourage my students to read and the question cards will provide opportunities for the class to understand how history affects current events.
