Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

No matter what children are struggling with, they should always be able to escape to a far away place where nothing can bother them. I am a first year teacher, teaching third grade. I have always loved this grade, and now that I am teaching it, I finally realize why. My school is a Title 1 funded school in a very high-needs community. The students are not wealthy, and in most cases, both parents are working full time jobs. At the end of each day, I have students who ask me if I am staying after for a while so they can come into the classroom and finish their homework or read in the reading area with the pillows and relax.

Almost all of my students are English Language Learners who, despite their struggles with the language, love reading. I use a small group structure called the Daily 5 in my classroom. During our reading block, students are allowed to choose from five different choices: read to self, read with someone, listen to reading, word works, and writing. This is my first year teaching, and I was not sure if my students would be able to engage themselves in a full hour and a half of reading, writing, and listening activities, but I was pleasantly surprised when I started the year. As soon as I introduced this structure to my students, they fell in love with it. I can get all of my students (and I do mean all of them) engaged in at least 4 out of the 5 activities for the entire 90 minutes. Since our reading time is at the end of the day, my students are constantly asking me when we are doing our Daily 5 rotations. When the time finally comes to start our rotations, they literally run to find an activity to participate in. They value this time above all else, and I am so happy to see that they have found the same love for reading that I have.

The 6 personal CD players that I have requested will be used within our Daily 5 rotations for "listen to reading." Since so many of my students struggle with the language barrier, I have found that they love being read to. I try my very hardest to incorporate shared readings and read-alouds into my daily schedule, but many times, my attention is needed in providing assistance or pulling small groups of students for intensive intervention plans. I believe that when students listen to fluent reading and follow along with books, they are learning to pronounce words, decode, identify, and comprehend a story that may be far above their reading ability. I have students who (with my 1 personal CD player) are listening to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. They are so interested in the book and are constantly wanting to discuss the storyline with me. Normally, this text would be much too difficult to read, but with the book on CD, they are able to listen and read along. I feel that books on CD are amazing for English Language Learners, and truly do help them read above and beyond what they would be capable of by themselves.

Your donation will ensure that my students are receiving what they wish for and what they truly need. Reading is such an important part of our daily lives, and with your donation, we can open these students' eyes to the possibilities and stories that books hold. I am confident that if their love for reading is developed now, it will carry them through their entire lifetimes.
