Transport Yourself Back in Time

My students need a projector in order to enhance their learning experience, and to virtually visit the ancient world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Plato once said to Socrates “…knowledge is the food of the soul,” and what I teach my students becomes the nourishment needed to peak the curiosity of a young adolescent who may never have cared to learn about the ancient world. I teach 7th grade social studies in a high poverty community, and to many of my students what I teach them may be the first time they ever heard of such a world. I mainly teach about ancient civilizations beginning with the origins of man and ending with the Romans. Many of my students either speak English as their second language, or their parents do not or minimally speak English. I also have many students with some type of learning disability. How I teach them impacts what they learn immensely. Close your eyes and transport yourself back in time to 7th grade. You are sitting down in social studies class with a book that seems as if it has been used for 100 years. Your teacher is at the head of the classroom droning on about the ancient Egyptians and their achievements. All you have is your textbook in front of you with a few small visuals such as a picture of Khufu’s pyramid, or map of Egypt to keep your interest. Boring, right? I know I was drifting off when I was twelve. Now picture a classroom with an LCD projector connected to the Internet. Egypt is now brought to the classroom. Whether your teacher is taking you on a virtual field trip down the Nile River, or roaming through one of the Great Pyramids at Giza; you are engaged. You are learning. Your eyes are wide open, and interested in ancient Egypt. That is what I want for my students. Many of my students have disabilities in language and communication, and have a difficult time learning, but with visual aids they can comprehend more easily what they hear. If a student can see an actual irrigation field, or a computer model of one the way they worked in ancient Sumer, then my students will understand it better and learn it for the long term. In today’s modern age history does not need to be boring. With an LCD projector I will be able to hook my computer into it and bring the world to my students peaking their curiosity. Imagine what school would have been like for you if you had the technology we have today. Unfortunately, though I have a beautiful classroom with a few computers, they are not up to date with technology. However, I do have one computer, the teacher’s computer, which is equipped to handle many of the websites and videos available online. The problem is a 16 inch monitor is not big enough for a class of 24 to gather around and view it, though I have done this with great difficulty. With an LCD projector the whole class would be able to view what ever website, video, or webquest I wanted to show them with ease. I wish I had the financial ability to run out to a store and buy an LCD projector myself because I would, but with your help this wish may become a possibility. Anne Frank, diarist and holocaust survivor, once wrote that “Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!” I believe with you generous support and my love of teaching; you, my students, and I can accomplish this task and realize the potential that lies within each and every one of us.
