Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember playing four square at recess? I used to run to the court to grab a prime square. My students don’t know four square… or hopscotch, or spud, or most other playground games.
I teach fourth grade in a high needs school in urban New York. Most of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. My students are energetic and talented. They love playing games, especially outside, but they are rarely given an opportunity to do so.
Play is so important for healthy child development that the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights recognized it as a fundamental right for children. My students have recess on a paved yard where they are given twenty minutes of playtime. Students throw bouncy balls (and occasionally lose the balls on the school roof) and stand in groups, but are not engaged in physical activity. This is partly because they do not have any playground equipment. There are almost a thousand students in the school and just one gym teacher, so most students do not receive adequate physical education.
I want to give students the opportunity to have a fun-filled, structured recess, full of games and other supervised activities. This project will benefit our whole academy and will cut down on social issues, such as bullying. With the right playground equipment and some guidance from teachers, students will be playing hopscotch, double-dutch, spud, four square, and many other playground games that all children should experience. On rainy days, we can have structured music and rhythm games inside, ensuring that children enjoy their recess time, rain or shine.
That’s where YOU come in! Your help will ensure that my students have a structured, fun, game-filled recess by providing the beanbags, Frisbees, jump ropes, playground balls, safety cones, and double-dutch ropes that they need. You will make it possible for them to release their energy in a fun, productive way. When students release their energy at recess, they can focus on improving their academic achievement in the classroom. Donate now—it’s great weather for kickball!
