"I don't know what to write!" As a teacher of both reading and writing, I have heard this complaint a million times, if not, more! This year, I know that I will hear the same from my second and third graders. And, this year, armed with the materials that I have requested, I hope to be able to tell them, "Let's write and roll!" I have been at my school for the last 18 years and our population has stayed the same. Each year between 80-90% of our population qualifies for free or price-reduced meals. Our students and their families face difficult challenges everyday.

This year, my district is putting into full swing a new reading and writing curriculum where students will be required to work in centers or stations independently while the teacher is working with a small group of children. The rest of the class would need high-interest reading/writing centers that would help them maintain their focus decreasing, if not eliminating, the need for constant teacher-supervision or intervention.

If my proposal is funded, the materials I requested will provide what my students need: a variety of materials, supplies, project ideas, prompts, manipulatives, and learning activities that will inspire them to read, write not only complete sentences but cohesive paragraphs as well. The materials I requested provide opportunities to learn and practice writing complete sentences, short paragraphs, and in different genres. While reading is so very important, we can not afford to ignore teaching writing. And, often, students have difficulties with this. They often complain that they do not know what to write about. The materials I requested will eliminate this problem. In addition, they will spark new ideas in my students encouraging them to write more.

It will be impossible for my students to achieve their goals of becoming not only good readers but good writers as well without your help. Your generous contribution will ensure that my second and third graders grow to be successful writers this year. Your kindness will ensure that they will learn to love both reading and writing. You will make it possible for my young students to enjoy the writing process and to be proud of their accomplishments!
