What do you remember most about your science classes? I'd bet it was the laboratory activities. Imagine, then, what it would have been like if, rather than being stocked with the appropriate supplies, you were asked to do arts-and-crafts projects: coloring a worksheet, cut and paste, etc. For several units in my Earth Science course, the students are reduced to doing just that sort of arts-and-crafts activity because we just do not have the appropriate supplies. As a young school, we had planned to acquire supplies slowly over the course of several years, but when the current economic crisis slashed this nation's educational budgets, it came as no surprise that I had to seek alternative funding for these critical laboratory supplies. I am asking for only the most critical supplies. No fancy equipment here. With a simple table fan, foil roaster pan, and bucket of water, I can create a valuable laboratory learning experience. However, the table fans are a bit pricey for one teacher to pay for out of pocket, so I am asking for your help. Please help my students understand the relationship between wind speed and wave velocity. Please help my students understand how hail is formed. Please help my students understand the relationship between wind and sand dune formation. These fans are used in more than one lab and more than one unit of study, but unless you fund the fans, those labs will never be carried out. Please help my students avoid having to color, cut and paste. Thank you.
