Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a high school Spanish teacher at a small public school on the west side of Chicago. I work in a school that is predominately African-American in a high-needs community. My students will be juniors this year, and I cannot wait to teach them another year of Spanish! This year, I want my students to engage with the many different communities of culture that live in Chicago. There is a large number of Spanish speakers living in Chicago, and I believe that it is important for my students to feel comfortable conversing in Spanish and visiting neighborhoods that are different from their own. The unit that I am teaching is called "En mi barrio," (In my neighborhood). For our end-of-unit final project, I am taking my students on a neighborhood walk through a predominately Hispanic/Latino neighborhood on the city's southwest side. I want my students to create photo-journals detailing their experience of this neighborhood walk. I hope that in visiting this neighborhood and spending time with the community, my students will have a greater appreciation of the diversity in neighborhoods that is present in Chicago. In order to complete the photo journal, I will need 6 digital cameras for the students to take photos of their neighborhood walk. With these digital cameras, you will make it possible for my students to share their images and create memories that will last for a life time. I truly believe this project will have a profound impact on how my students view neighborhoods in Chicago, and I hope that this unit will open their eyes to the beauty and diversity present all over their city.
