Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Attention, prospective donors: While books are wonderful, essential components of learning, pages grow brittle and yellow. Spines crack. Dust jackets become dustier jackets. Help me combat this mustiness by injecting some vitality into these books; all I need is an interactive whiteboard! I teach English language arts at an arts-centered middle school for the gifted and talented. My students are in the eighth-grade, but I challenge them to do work that adequately prepares them for high school and college. Because of the difficulty inherent in using classic literature, I am constantly searching for ways to make the texts we read and the concepts we discuss accessible and user-friendly for all students.

Our school is innovative and cutting-edge in terms of its arts focus, its racial diversity, and its involvement in the community. With regard to technology, however, we are hopelessly in the stone age. That changed, to a degree, last year when one of our teachers installed a SmartBoard in her room. American history has now become more urgent and exciting for our students! While other teachers get the chance to use the board occasionally, it is difficult to share one interactive board with fifteen teachers. I have yet to use it for my classes, even though I have countless ideas for lessons in primary source research, composition and revision techniques, documentary and feature film analysis, and oral presentations.

I need a SmartBoard so that I can more consistently engage my students with the materials and texts of an English classroom. I want them to see photographs of actual letters written by novelists and political figures from the past, participate in online discussions, and access digital collections. I want to model for them, in a more explicit way, my personal revising strategies when writing a paper (by actually writing it in front of them). I want my students to touch the screen, write on it, and get involved with the images in a way that is much more dynamic than a traditional chalkboard. I want, in essence, to heighten the experience my students are having with literature in my classroom.

It's all up to you! We are a small school, in a bad economy, reduced to using old computers and wobbly desks. With your help, our students might look beyond their shabby environs and into the technology-driven world of the future.
