I have been able to run OT sessions on sensory relaxation techniques and work on the Zones of Regulation for Mood/Energy. My students love coming to the sensory space for the calm, quiet and comfort. They always look forward to any session held there. Most of all, the sensory space has had a \"stone soup\" effect in our school school; the principal placed a plant in the area, a teacher donated sound-reducing headphones, a head massager was donated after a holiday gift exchange, a sensory texture board was added. Most importantly, another teacher was inspired to create a \"calm corner\" in her classroom based on the sensory space and a third teacher has revealed that she has a funding source that she would like to use to improve her classroom in a similar way. The assistant principal and counselor are appreciative of the space and I add their comments here: \r\n Assistant Principal, Mr. Marsey \"The quiet corner has been and very welcome addition to my office space. The students use it daily and know it as a place to help process their feelings. It is used frequently by students who need brief, supportive breaks to manage emotions, sensory input, or academic stress. One student used the space during a difficult moment with peers, finding comfort in having a private, calm area to sit quietly and process feelings. Another student,feeling overwhelmed by classwork, used the quiet corner to practice breathing strategies, to help them regain a sense of calm before returning to learning. Additionally, a student, overstimulated by loud noises in the hallway, benefited from using the noise-canceling headphones, sharing that they \"just needed a moment of quiet\" before going back to class. In each instance, the quiet corner provided a safe, effective environment for self-regulation, allowing students to return to class more focused, calm, and ready to learn.\"\r\n Our counselor, Ms. Rodriquez, \" The calming corner has become an invaluable resource for our students and is used daily by those who need support during stressful, overwhelming, or overstimulating moments. Students can take a break in a calm, supportive environment where they can regulate their emotions, practice coping strategies, and regain a sense of control. A wide range of students benefit from this, including those who are feeling anxious, frustrated, or simply overstimulated during the school day. It has proven to be highly effective in helping students calm down and return to class more focused, regulated, and ready to learn. We have seen a positive impact on students' emotional well-being and overall school climate, and we are incredibly grateful for this meaningful resource made possible through Donor's Choose.\"","fullyFundedDate":1761161140215,"projectUrl":"project/a-soothing-and-safe-sensory-space/9789362/","projectTitle":"A Soothing and Safe Sensory Space","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Elle","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10299949"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_120","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":172,"numTeachers":13,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":28,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":55,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.5,"schoolId":120,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Middle School 224 Manh E School Arts & Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Middle School 224 Manh E School Arts & Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/ms-224-manh-e-center-arts-acad/120"}
