We're Buggin' Over Books!

My students need 11 leveled book bins, a set of Story Wands, book boxes and 2 additional paperback book sets.

30 high-risk children from difficult family situations needs your help to develop and foster a love of reading! I work at a charter school in Ohio with just about 30 wonderful, loving first graders. The students come from families that don't have much to give them other than their attention - and, oftentimes, they don't receive the necessary attention and love. I buy them supplies when they don't have them, I buy them hats and gloves for the winter time, and I buy them snacks so they don't go home with an empty stomach. I teach them how to be respectful, how to say "please" and "thank you", and how to be kind to others. I do so much for them. But... it's not enough. I want to be able to provide them with one of the most helpful items - BOOKS! Research has proven that a child succeeds in so many ways if they are able to read. Be that person that helps them succeed.

As stated above, I work in an area where families have very little to offer their children. I would love my children to come to school with books to read during quiet time or books to read to take quizzes on Accelerated Reader. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen. I have a small personal collection of books for my students to use but nothing that would keep the students excited for reading. I want the children to be able to browse through a big collection of books until they find something they REALLY want to read - not something they picked because there wasn't anything that caught their eye. I want my students to be able to find a book that interests them at their reading level. Some of them are at a Kindergarten level while some are at a second grade level. I'd love to be able to buy more books for my students but I just can't afford it right now.

My students need books from Kindergarten to second grade levels to excite them. They need a collection of books that they can browse through until they find something they WANT to read. My students need enough books to keep them interested and excited for a school year. I want them to love learning and that starts with books that are interesting and at their level. I chose different sets of leveled books and also a set of classic paperbacks. I also thought a collection of books on emotions would be very beneficial to them because many struggle with managing their anger and emotions.

Your help will not only help my students become interested in READING. The more they read, the better they will be at it. Then, it will impact all other subject areas. They will WANT to read out loud in front of other students, they will WANT to read math word problems, and, most importantly, they will be so proud of themselves! Be the change that my students need. Give them the greatest gift - BOOKS!
