In today's classroom teachers are responsible for teaching students and ensuring that they learn and gain one year of achievement despite their skill levels when they enter the classroom at the beginning of the school year. I am a fifth grade Math teacher who is challenged this upcoming school year with the task of educating special education students in the general education classroom, through an approach called inclusion. My school is a Title I school with a large percent of impoverished students who need a great deal of hands on teaching opportunities that also allow for many chances to practice the skills being taught.

By adding special education students to the general education classroom, the need to utilize differentiated learning and special modifications is increased. The obstacle faced by using inclusion is that many special education students do not learn best through the traditional lecture approach. They need a teacher who can present the information in many different ways.

With the use of an Elmo document camera and Real World Mathematics centers, the special education students will be able to experience new and repeated information in several ways, therefore, increasing the amount of information they will retain. Academic gaps can be closed and special education students can experience great gains and personal successes in the general education classroom; something they may not have expected of themselves.

There are times when we have the opportunity to make the greatest impact. Funding a project for students with special needs is that chance for your organization. These students have the largest academic obstacles to overcome. With your assistance their greatest academic potentials can be reached. As a donor you will become a partner with me in making a huge difference in the lives of our society's most vulnerable and needy student population.
