Are You My Egyptian Mummy?

My students need the air drying modeling clay and the plaster strips to design and construct their very own ancient Egyptian Mummy for their unit of study in Egypt.

I am a sixth grade inclusion teacher who works in a middle school setting in a high needs, city school district. My classified students are placed in my homeroom however I work with both homerooms on enrichment and hands on activities for the entire sixth grade population.

Enrichment and hands-on activities further the learning of the content area for all the students in the sixth grade. The students love these activities and it furthers their understanding and mastery of the content areas being addressed. We are very fortunate to be able to work on this projects with our art teacher who works directly with us in developing a program that is not offered at any of our other schools in the city but ours. Our students do great work and have received many awards for their work. We would love to continue these projects for the 2009-2010 school year but we need financial support from generous donor like those on DonorsChoose. We hope you can help us out this year!

We would greatly appreciate the Crayola air drying modeling clay and the plaster strips so our students could make their own Ancient Egyptian Mummy during our study of Ancient Egypt in our Social Studies and Reading Unit. The students will design their own mummy from scratch. They will make a clay model and when it is dry will wrap the plaster strips around it to resemble a real mummy. They will then research ancient mummies found during that time period, the mummification process, and why their were decorated the way they were. The students will then decorate their mummies using acrylic paints, jewels, or designs found on ancient mummies of Egypt. They will then write a piece describing their mummy and why they decorated it the way they did.

The purchase of the Crayola air drying modeling clay and plaster strips will allow our students to design and make their own Egyptian Mummy during our unit of study of Ancient Egypt in Social Studies and Reading. These enrichment project will provide a hands on approach to learning and help students understand the mummification process and decoration of the mummy itself. We would be so very pleased if we could do this project with our sixth grade students this year even though the financial situation is poor for us at this time. Any help we could receive would be greatly appreciated by the students and the teachers at our grade level.
