"The pre-teens at my inner-city school would benefit greatly from physical activity that would help them stay focused, alert, and ready to learn in the classroom.
I teach 5th grade in a low-income urban community. Fifth graders, at ages 9-11, are in need of physical activity to promote energy, mental alertness, and self-esteem that so often accompanies physical fitness. The dense population and gang violence in our neighborhood creates little opportunity for the kids to engage in safe outdoor physical activity. My grade-level team and I have noticed the effects of this on our students. Many are often lethargic during learning time and insecure about their body weight, which in turn affects their ability to fully participate in the classroom.
The other 5th grade teacher and I want to change this by running an after-school fitness club that will give students in grades 5 and 6 an opportunity to have fun and be physically active. We've shared this idea with our students, and they are very excited about this opportunity. In order to educate our students about physical fitness and inspire them to create life-long exercise habits, we plan to run an after-school program that blends various modes of physical fitness: yoga, jogging, jump roping, and resistance training. We need yoga mats, jump ropes and resistance bands in order to do this. Your help will increase fitness for students in a community with little opportunity for physical activity, therefore supporting their health, self-esteem, and ability to learn.
My students need 12 yoga mats, 12 resistance bands, and 12 jump ropes.
The cost of this proposal is $492, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear wendi, Matthew, Lea, Kristen, Apartment Therapy, Jose, Jennifer, Molly, Kayla and Anonymous Donor,
Thank you so much for your generosity in funding my project! My students are looking forward to having fun while getting fit. I am also very excited to see this fitness club translate into academic success and social confidence. I plan to invite my students to participate in this club after school, as well as allow them to "check out" the materials to bring them home. This way, they can be physically active after school and on the weekends with their families, as well. I truly believe that kids that engage in physical activity are better able to learn. Thank you for helping this become a reality for my students! With gratitude, Ms. C.
