Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am so lucky to be working with 22 amazing second graders. My school is a Pre-K to third grade building. The students are 99% Hispanic and come from low-income homes. Many are on free or reduced lunch. One of the most pressing issues in our school community is the lack of technology and outside resources. Many of my students do not have access to computers or the Internet at home because the parents are doing their best to meet their child’s basic needs and can’t afford computers. I am a strong advocate for technology and believe technology offers so many learning opportunities and opens up so many doors for students. Many of my students have not ventured out of their immediate surroundings and are unaware of the rich culture, sights, and sounds in the world outside of their community. Whenever we are learning or talking about something new, we dive into the computer to learn more about it. 22 kids and I cram in front of a small computer screen to try to learn more. As much as I love showing them all there is, it makes it sitting in front of a small computer screen makes it difficult for them to clearly see and hear the information. I love their desire and curiosity and want to expose them to everything I can. By getting an LCD projector, I will be able to display the information on the overhead screen in our classroom so that all the kids can see and learn. Often, I also create PowerPoint lessons for my students and would love to present them using the LCD projector so that all my students can benefit, not just the ones sitting by the computer. I will also use the LCD to model websites so that they can be successful when using them on their own during center time. The ELMO will also be an amazing tool to have in the classroom. As a primary teacher, it is so important to provide quality literature to my students. One way that I would love to do this is to be able to pull literature into my lessons using the ELMO. The Elmo will allow me to take the pages from the book and present them on the large overhead screen. Modeling is also very important in my classroom and the ELMO will allow me to display graphic organizers and model how to fill them out with my students. Since the majority of my students do not have computers at home, it is so important that I provide them with as much access as possible. Through your generosity, I will be able to create a bridge to technology for my students. I will be able to properly model the use of technology and the Internet as an information resource. I will also be able to incorporate the LCD and ELMO into all subject matters to enrich the lessons and provide an interactive way for my students to learn.
