Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our first anatomy and physiology class, a chance to introduce students to the many uses of science in their daily lives. Most students that attend a large high school with money do not have problems with supplies but, my students and I do not have that luxury. We are part of a small charter school inside a middle school with at least 95% of students living below or at poverty level and with dysfunctional family homes. Science is the last thing on their mind as is college for some of the 12th graders.

Yet, I am willing to provide a good experience in science and relate the material to different health issues. We have no equipment for the first year and are in a tight budget for a small school.

My hope is to encourage, inspire, and enhance their education with the materials I receive from DonorsChoose. With the use of blood smear slides, diabetes test kit, stethoscopes, reflex hammer, vision kit, and heart model the students and I will be able to make connections of text with hands on activities.

With your help I can empower students in a high poverty community to take an active role in their own health. The exposure students gain with the hands on activities will be more apt to lead some of our confused students to explore post-secondary education as an option instead of gangs and a life of regret.
