Have you ever wondered what really goes on when your child is at school? That is exactly what the parents of my first graders always ask, "What do you do in first grade?" I would like to opportunity for my students to show them just that, not just tell them "nothing" when they get off the bus everyday. Parents in my rural Ohio school district crave to know more about their child's day and also to be more involved in what they do at school, but with an economy that demands that both parents work full time it is not always possible for parents to be as involved as they would like in what their child does at school.

I started a classroom website last school year as another way for parents to keep up to date on what was going on in our room and in our school. The website was a huge success and now I would like to take it a step further and make it more student driven. I would like to teach my students how to take pictures and put them on our site, how to take video of what we are doing, and even to do a weekly news report of the classroom and school announcements.

To be able to do these things I will need cameras for both still and action digital photography. By teaching my students to take and upload pictures and videos I will be giving them valuable skills for their later careers in this vastly digital and web based society. I also plan to have each child take turns doing different jobs over the year, such as video recorder, news reporter, editor, and web technician. By doing each of these jobs I hope to instill a sense of pride in a job well done, as well as a sense of responsibility to the group as a whole in each of my students.

By donating to this worthwhile project you will be giving the students in my first grade class the opportunity to not just tell their parents what they did at school each day, but to show them. This project will bridge the gap that exists between school and home, with the student often stuck in the middle. What parent, student, or teacher could ask for more than that?
