Early childhood special education students need hands on materials to help connect to storytelling experiences and develop emergent reading.

We have a scratch and dent classroom with castoff furniture to provide a limited 2 hour/4 day a week program for children with mild delays. These students have no other preschool options available since the cost of private preschool is prohibitive in our high poverty area.

We need many resources to support early literacy and math skills. These are children who must have many varied opportunities to interact with materials in a highly structured environment. These kids need to be able to retell and re-enact stories with real materials to support early reading skills needed for elementary success. These children are usually experiencing the classroom and teaching staff for the very first time. The children in my program are already behind their peers developmentally. We know through research that early intervention is the area where educators can effect the greatest change. The children in this classroom can benefit from materials that support preacademic skills that encourage problem solving and learning. The goal is to also provide companion materials and activities that can be sent home for a shared learning experience involving parents &/R caregivers. The materials requested are storytelling kits with puppets/props to help students connect to essential vocabulary and support comprehension. This familiar classic story telling kit has 10 familiar story books and hands on props. Each kit covers the literary genre of folk and fairy tales.

By supporting these students we are giving children important skills and a love of learning. Donors choosing to support this project also extend their commitment to parents by enriching their child's educational experience in an economically limited community.
